Stores, scrubbed

The atmospheric movement of pollutants from sources to receptors is only one form of translocation. A second one involves our attempt to control air pollutants at the source. The control of parhculate matter by wet or dry scrubbing techniques 3delds large quantities of waste materials—often toxic—which are subsequently taken to landfills. If these wastes are not properly stored, they can be released to soil or water systems. The prime examples involve the disposal of toxic materials in dump sites or landfills. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 and subsequent revisions are examples of legislation to ensure proper management of solid waste disposal and to minimize damage to areas near landfills (4). 

Scrub all utensils, containers, working surfaces, and equipment with warm 10% trisodium phosphate solution after each sample. Wherever possible, rinse each utensil and piece of equipment with acetone and benzene. Because parathion residues adhere so tenaciously to glass surfaces, subject all glassware to the following sequence of washes warm 10% trisodium phosphate solution, distilled water, acetone, and benzene. Rinse stored glassware with benzene again just prior to use. 

The solvent was loaded with 137Cs and subsamples were stored on a shaker table while in contact with the extract, scrub, or strip aqueous phases. Evidence of solvent degradation was evaluated for exposure times of 83 days this resulted in estimated solvent doses of 1.24 Mrad, equivalent to the dose expected to be received during 16.5 years of operation at the SRS plant. 

Clean all apparatus and your lab station. Put the wire, NaCl, and weighing paper in the containers designated by your teacher. Pour the water from the beakers into the sink. Scrub the cooled evaporating dish with soap, water, and a scrub brush. Be certain that the gas valves at your lab station and the nearest lab station are turned off. Be sure lab equipment is completely cool before storing it. Always wash your hands thoroughly after all lab work is finished and before you leave the lab. 

Hydrogen sulfide separated from natural gas by amine scrubbing is a highly odorous, toxic, low boiling gas and for these reasons is difficult to store or ship in large quantities. Hence, a Claus unit is closely associated with each amine scrubber to convert the hydrogen sulfide gas product of the scrubber to elemental sulfur. This is much easier and safer to store and ship in large quantities. 

Precautions. All reagents are filtered after preparation, stored in the refrigerator, and warmed to room temperature before use. The substrate solutions should be made up only in a quantity sufficient for a daily run. At the end of the day, the AutoAnalyzer is "scrubbed with a low suds-forming detergent (Heikol) followed by copious rinsing with distilled water. This maneuver eliminates noise from the tracings. 

Materials. The solvent, cyclohexane was Phillips polymerization grade and was dried by counter current scrubbing with purified N2, followed by two consecutive passages through Alcoa F-1 activated alumina. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was stored over activated alumina after distillation from powdered calcium hydride (CaH2) under N2 blanket. 

The light gases such as methane and ethane are used as fuels in the refineries and may be burnt as waste products if not saleable. Propane and butane are denser. They are first scrubbed and then liquefied under pressure and stored in tanks. Butylene is produced in various refining processes. It is the raw material used in the synthesis of rubber.
