Storage conditions changes

Ambient temperatures, source oils, performance requirements, and storage conditions change throughout the world, requiring SFI profile adjustment to meet varying product needs. Typical SFI shortening profiles are shown in Figure 2. 

Paper is moisture sensitive and contains on average 7% moisture under normal storage conditions. Changes in moisture may induce temporary curl or distortion, or boil-off when heated.

The primary function of a continuous thickener is to concentrate sus-penaed solids by gravity settling so that a steady-state material balance is achieved, solids being withdrawn continuously in the underflow at the rate they are supphed in the feed. Normally, an inventory of pulp is maintained in order to achieve the desired concentration. This volume will vary somewhat as operating conditions change on occasion, this inventoiy can be used for storage of sohds when reed and underflow rates are reduced or temporarily suspended. 

Safer Storage Conditions The hazards associated with storage facihties can often be reduced significantly by changing storage con(i-tions. The primary objective is to reduce the driving force available to transport the hazardous material into the atmosphere in case of a leak (Hendershot, 1988). Some methods to accomplish this follow. 

Induced instability of a dispersion is the most important form of instability encountered in practice, for here the dispersion is unable to maintain a given structure during changes in storage conditions. Sometimes the structural breakdown is permanent (in which case the initial dispersion at rest is metastable) at other times the structure is rebuilt on removal of the external influence. 

If the holding time is inconveniently short, then the storage conditions have to be changed or the sample may have to be stabilized in some way. 

Storage vessels are usually located on tank farms. The space around a tank and the distances to other equipment depend on the materials stored, their potential hazardousness and the possibility of the unexpected changes in storage conditions. Fluid storages should be in a safe location away from process and public areas. It is also important to prevent fire spreading between tanks by keeping the level of heat radiation in an acceptable level (Mecklenburgh, 1985). 

A stability-indicating method is a validated quantitative analytical procedure that can detect the changes with time in the pertinent properties of the drug substance and drug product under defined storage condition. If a significant change occurs at any time during the 6 months testing at the accelerated condition, additional testing at the intermediate storage condition should be conducted and evaluated. 

For accelerated studies, a minimum of three time points (including the initial and final time points, 0 and 6 months) of at least 6 months is recommended. If a significant change is observed at the accelerated storage condition, testing at the intermediate storage condition for a minimum of four time points (including the initial and final time points) from a 12-month study is recommended.
