Stephens theory

In this contribution, we summarize the Stephens theory of VCD (Section 2.4.2), discuss its implementation using ab initio methods, most importantly DFT (Section 2.4.3), discuss the determination of the ACs of chiral molecules using VCD (Section 2.4.4), and, finally, discuss future developments expected to enhance the prediction of VCD spectra (Section 2.4.5).

John von Neuman, one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, believed that the sciences, in essence, do not try to explain, they hardly even try to interpret they mainly make models. By a model he meant a mathematical construct that, with the addition of certain verbal interpretations, describes observed phenomena. The justification of such a mathematical construct is solely and precisely that it is expected to work. Stephen Hawking also believes that physical theories are just mathematical models we construct and that it is meaningless to ask whether they correspond to reality, just as it is to ask whether they predict observations.

I was also familiar with the work of science historian Stephen Brush who had argued that in most important cases, such as relativity theory and quantum mechanics, and contrary to popular opinion, it was successful accommodations that had swayed scientists of the time rather than any dramatic predictions. 

Worrall had made similar claims regarding theories of light developed in the seventeenth century and in particular, the case of Fresnel whose dramatic and subsequently confirmed predictions had not been as influential as his accommodation of already known optical phenomena. Meanwhile, Stephen Brush had turned his attention to chemistry and the periodic table, given that this seemed to be a case for which successful predictions made by Mendeleev are widely held to have been the reason for the acceptance of the periodic...

We suggest that approaches like those in CHEMLAB can be most effective as a thinking aid for the chemist. As Stephen Wolfram said in the June 1984 Scientific American (an excellent issue on computers) (7), "Computation is emerging as a major new approach to science, supplementing the long standing methodologies of theory and experiment. .. Computers extend the realm of experimental science."... 

Yet it is on the issues of reproducibility and instrumentation that Occult Chemistry failed to persuade, at least outside of Theosophical circles and the small group of scientists in recent years who have been willing to work entirely at the level of theory. Besant and Leadbeater could move beyond older models of science, which based themselves upon deductions from revealed principles (alchemical or scientific deductions from the writings of the Hermetic tradition, for instance, or from the revelations of H. P. Blavatsky), by turning to experimentation. Not surprisingly, their form of experimentation did not admit of reproducibility. In spite of efforts by Stephen Phillips to conduct blind trials using a Buddhist clairvoyant to confirm Besant and Lead-beater s micro-psi visions (1996,48), direct experience is neither convincingly verifiable nor falsifiable.

Polavatapu, et al. (128) have identified a VCD band near 12(X) cm in phenylcaibinols that correlates with configuration. Wieser and co-workers (129, 130) have recently reported FTIR-VCD spectra of chiral methyloxetan molecules. In the area of theoretical calculations, Lx>we, Stephens, and Segal (131, 132) have implemented the theory of Stephens (118) in calculations on trans-1,2,-dideuteriocyclopropane, tron5-l,2-dideuteriocyclobutane, and propylene oxide. For the latter two molecules, favorable agreement with experiment was found. The first application of VCD to kinetic analysis has also been reported for (1/ , 2R)-dideuteriocyclobutane thermolysis (133).
