Because the design of agglomeration plants, especially of those using briquetting, can be very compact, they are often suitable for installation at or near the dust-collection system(s) (Fig. 8.29). For steel foundries, a 100 % use of return metal is uncommon, due to the amount of dissolved gas. Operators consider 60 % to be the maximum amount of return metal (feeders, scrap castings,...) in the charge metal. Swarf and turnings may cause excessive molten metal oxidation. 

Taps having no flutes, known as cold-forming taps, produce the thread hy plastic deformation of the material and therefore no swarf is produced hy the action. This type of tap is used with ductile materials such as soft steels, aluminium and zinc alloys. Because the material is displaced, the tapping drill Is larger than that for taps which cut, e.g. an MIO cut thread has a tapping drill of 8.5mm, while an MIO cold-formed thread has a tapping drill of 9.3 mm. 

The bed is securely bolted to a heavy-gauge steel cabinet containing electrical connections and a tool cupboard, and provides a full-length cutting-fluid and swarf tray. 

Larger lathes are best fitted with sliding shield guards shown in Fig. 9.9. These are made from high-quality steel with a polycarbonate window to provide maximum operator protection from chuck, swarf and coolant and provide excellent visibUity.
