Atomizers Atomization is the process oT breaking up a continuous liquid phase into discrete droplets. Figure 27-24 shows the idealized process by which the surface area or a liquid sheet is increased until it forms droplets. Atomizers may be classified into two broad groups (see Fig. 27-25) pressure atomizers, in which fuel oil is injected at high pressure, and twin-fluid atomizers, in which fuel oil is injected at moderate pressure and a compressible fluid (steam or air) assists in the atomization process. Low oil viscosity (less than 15 mmVs) is required for effective atomization (i.e., small droplet size). Light oils, such as No. 2 fuel oil, may be atomized at ambient temperature. However, heavy oils must be heated to produce the desired viscosity. [Pg.2143]

The cyclic hot-water reheater system recovers heat from the product solids cooler in the calcination area and uses this heat to displace steam in the stack gas reheater. The fluidized-bed calciner is fired with station coal rather than expensive No. 2 fuel oil which was used in the previous conventional MgO evaluation. Both of these latter design changes reflect new technology which may require some additional development work before they are accepted as proven for commercial usage. [Pg.385]

Combination burners are typically freestanding burners that can fire both gas and liquid fuels. The liquids that are commonly burned are fuels such as No. 2 fuel oil (diesel) or No. 6 fuel oil. These burners also require connections for the medium used to atomize the liquid fuel, which is typically steam or air. The burner can be used to fire only gas, only liquid, or some combination of the two. Figure 18.12 is a rendering of an up-fired combination burner. [Pg.386]
