Standard practice, definition

To make further progress, it is standard practice to take this definition of the spectral density and replace it by a continuous form based on physical intuition. A form that is often used for the spectral density is a product of ohmic dissipation qco (which corresponds to Markovian dynamics) times an exponential cutoff (which reflects the fact that frequencies of the normal modes of a finite system have an upper cutoff) ... [Pg.75]

Altitude Response. Pressure response is an issue that needs to be addressed for every instrument deployed on an aircraft. First, it must be decided how chemical abundances are to be reported. If standard practice is followed and they are reported as mixing ratios, then it must be determined whether the instrument is fundamentally a mass- or a concentration-depen-dent sensor, because this definition determines the first-order means by which instrument response is converted to mixing ratios as a function of pressure. In this context, a mass-sensitive detector is a device with an output signal that is a function of the mass flow of analyte molecules a concentration-sensitive detector is one in which the response is proportional to the absolute concentration, that is, molecules per cubic centimeter. [Pg.115]

It is standard practice in thermodynamics to divide things up into the system and the surroundings (Frame 1). Figure 7.1 shows two examples. In defining the system we define a definitive boundary. Once this designation is made, thermodynamics then considers the transfer of energy (defined as the capacity to do work, w or transfer heat, q) and matter to and from the system. For this we need to adopt a sign convention. [Pg.24]

A standard practice is a definitive procedure for performing one or more specific operations or functions that do not produce a test result. We suggest that standards for the restoration of documents should fall in this category. [Pg.290]

The term standard operating procedure (SOP) is properly restricted to CLP operations (see Section 5.2 and below) where it has a precise definition within the terms of the standard. However, the term is widely used by laboratories not complying with GLP as a synonym for procedures to emphasise the importance of following them as standard practice (see Section 2.2). [Pg.63]

Eq. (27) represents the so-called practical definition of the pH scale.f Evidently, in practice the voltage differences expressed in Eqs. (26) and (27) are not measured inasmuch as the meters provide direct pH readings. Hence, instead of the E(S) values, the pH(S) values are adjusted directly on the intrument scale. In the preparation of standard buffer solutions (Table 2), it is essential to use high-purity materials and carbon dioxide-free freshly distilled water, the specific conductance of which should not exceed 2 pS/cm. [Pg.1510]

Any definition of a low-y nucleus will be somewhat arbitrary, but a convenient practical definition is based on the tuning frequency ranges of commercial MAS probes. Since standard probes normally tune down to N, nuclei which resonate below this frequency (40 MHz on a spectrometer equipped with a 9.4 T magnet) will be defined as low-y for the purpose of this Chapter. The lower limit of this frequency range is taken to be 10 MHz, since this is the lowest frequency at which most commercial spectrometers will operate. [Pg.461]

Because of this, it is standard practice to correct the Fourier transforms of classical correlation functions with the factor 1/(1 + e " ). This also assures that the relaxation rates for quantum and classical correlation functions converge in the limit of high temperature, as they should. In terms of the notation used above, this correction can be applied using the definitions... [Pg.91]

Antithyroid medication use in children and adolescents is associated with minor and major side-effects. Although the use of antithyroid medications is a standard practice, the use of antithyroid medications involves definite risks. [Pg.952]

The definitions of the pertinent properties are not necessarily totally unambiguous. The reasons are some unfortunate federal regulations and some misguided standard practices. The adopted definitions are consistent with GPA-2I72 which is the most recent standard published covering this topic. [Pg.7]

The clinical engineering department must consistently gather and enter data into the database. The database becomes the practical definition of the services and work performed by the department. This standardized database allows rapid, retrospective analysis of the data to determine specific indicators identifying problems and assist in developing solutions for implementation. A minimum database should allow the gathering and storage of the following data ... [Pg.804]

Tool Shape and Trajectory Definition In order to curb a great variety of all possible tool shapes and sizes, the industry focuses on the standardized geometric definition of a generalized cutting tool that is based on the APT definition. The most comprehensive shape of an APT cutter may consist of the bottom and side lines and fillets connecting the lines, as shown in Fig. 5. However, in practical applications, the range of used tool shapes is narrower. The most used tool shapes, also in five-axis machining, are shown in Fig. 6. [Pg.516]

Note that reaction 1.1 represents acid dissociation in water, or aqueous solution, yet pK, values can in principal be determined in any solvent. Deprotonation reactions such as reaction 1.1 are most often written with (aq) representing the unknown micro and bulk solvation effects of the solvent, water in this case. The exact nature of the solvated proton in water is unknown at this time and is the subject of much research the standard practice is to use a nominal definition for the solvated proton, and to represent the solvated proton as H+j q, [32,33]. This practice is justified because the solvated proton exists in a cluster of many water molecules, and proton transfer reactions depend on the magnitude of the proton s solvation... [Pg.22]

Three classifications, suspended, dissolved, and volatile sohds, are of particular importance in defining water quality. Suspended sohds and dissolved sohds are measures of size, while volatile sohds is based on a procedure— burning. Filtration through a standard 1.2-/rm pore size filter is used to define suspended and dissolved sohds. The practical definition of suspended sohds is particles larger... [Pg.270]

The different techniques available for the determination of dynamic mechanical properties include several modes of load application and a number of dependent variables (temperature, frequency, and time). ASTM D 4092 provides a collection of definitions and terms, the most important of them described in Section 24.5.1. ASTM D 4065 describes standard practice in determining dynamic mechanical properties according to a variety of experimental methods see Fig. 24.23. [Pg.439]
