Use of a good antioxidant is recommended for almost all neoprene compounds where color is not of importance, a staining antioxidant can be used. The substituted or hindered phenols, eg, Naugawhite (Uniroyal) and Antioxidant 2246 (American Cyanamid), are used where a minimum of product discoloration or staining is requited. 

Staining antioxidants such as AJ-isopropyl-AT-phenyl-/>-phenylenediamine [101-72-4] (36) are preferred for the manufacture of tires (see also Amines, AROMATIC, PHEN YLENEDI amines). These potent antioxidants also have antiozonant activity and retard stress cracking of the vulcanized rubber. Carbon black (qv), used in tires for reinforcement, hides the color developed by the antioxidant. According to use requirements, up to 3% of an amine antioxidant having antiozonant activity is added prior to vulcanization.

Analysis of the oxidation products of chain-breaking antioxidants from the group of dihydric phenols reveal that quinoid compounds are involved in the mechanism of their action. Due to the formation of benzoquinones and hydroxybenzoquinones, the dihydric phenols are staining antioxidants. This fact reduces the technical importance of this in other ways very interesting group of antioxidants.
