Newly fermented wines are usually supersaturated with potassium bitartrate. Wineries routinely remove the excess potassium bitartrate in wines by refrigeration or ion exchange procedures. These steps are necessary to obtain a wine free of tartrate deposits after bottling. Calcium may also combine with tartrates which contribute to the deposits in wines. Generally, the stabilization practices for potassium bitartrate are sufficient to remove calcium tartrate from wines.

Blythe (32) made a survey of the stability practices of 40 pharmaceutical companies. He found that a majority used exaggerated conditions of temperature, humidity, and light to test the stability of pharmaceutical products. Correlations of the data obtained with that of shelf-life data differed considerably. 

In converting six-membered cyclanes (methylcyclohexane, ethylcyclohexane), palladium deposited on alumina revealed a high dehydrogenating activity and stability, practically equaling that of Pt-alumina. 

As catalysts, zeolites combine the advantages of high density of catalytically active centers with high thermal stability. The above particulars must be considered in the selection of a suitable light stabilizer. Practical experience accumulated over the years enables us to give some general guidelines for the use of HALS for light stabilization of polymers. The concentration of HALS usually varies from 0.1 to 0.3% but for demanding applications the concentration can reach or even exceed 1% by weight. 

The depolymerization reaction cannot be stabilized practically. The same is true for random chain scission. However, the depolymerization can be slowed down by antioxidants. For this reason heat stabilizers have become very important in the plastics industry, mainly for halogen-containing polymers that decompose by nonchain scission.
