Sprouting events

Initial insult modification may have an antiepileptogenic and disease-modifying effect. The effect of phenobarbital (80 mg kg ), MK-801 (4 mg kg ), or phenytoin (100 mg kg ) at 1, 2, and 4 h after initiation of continuous hippocampal stimulation on the development of epilepsy was investigated. Both phenobarbital and MK-801 reduced the percentage of animals developing epilepsy. The mechanism may have involved inhibition of the cascade of events that leads to the death of critical neuronal populations and cell death-induced reactive gliosis, sprouting, and... 

In addition, after nerve and tissue destruction, regenerative sprouts rewire the afferent sensory system, where non-noxious stimuli can cause pain (allo-dynia). Schwann cells in damaged nerves produce increased mRNA for NGF and their receptors for regenerative events. Damaged axons often express adrenoreceptors, which cause discharges in response to circulating epinephrine and norepinephrine (NE). 

Sprouted Grains, During World War II, people were advised to use sprouted seeds as sources of vitamin C in the event that the supplies of fresh produce became limited. Nevertheless, few people are aware of the other improvements in nutritive value which result from the sprouting of the cereal grains. Table C-8 shows how the sprouting of oats in a special nutrient solution (the process known as hydroponic sprouting) affects the level of nutrients.
