Spring-loaded pressure reliefs

Design of spring-loaded pressure-relief valves is supported by a well-established mechanical engineering science base. With the use of established techniques, together with modern developments in zone and field modeling, there is potential for incremental improvements to be made to flow structure and stability or modulation of relief valves. However, for leading manufacturers supplying the mass market, the performance vs. cost balance must surely be close to its optimum. 

Pressure-relief Devices. Spring-loaded pressure-relief valves and rupture disks of thin sheet material are available from manufacturers (see " Chemical Engineering Catalog ). When using pressure-relief disks, a strictly noncorrosive material must be specified because of the requirement of maintaining strength in very small thickness. 

Gas pressure was maintained in the cell by placing spring loaded pressure relief valves at the outlets. The effluents were bled into lOmL graduated cylinders to collect the water effluent. Tees were placed in the outlet lines with relative humidity sensors in the dead legs of the tees. The water content of the outlet streams was measured with humidity sensors (Sensirion SHT7X). 

All pressure regulators should be equipped with spring-loaded pressure-relief valves (see section 6.D.2.2.1 for further information on pressure-relief devices) to protect the low-pressure side. When used on cylinders of flammable, toxic, or otherwise hazardous gases, the relief valve should be vented to a hood or other safe location. The use of internal-bleed-type regulators should be avoided. Regulators should be removed from corrosive gases immediately after use and flushed with dry air or nitrogen. Mercury bubblers should not be used. 

Single-unit tank cars are protected from excessive internal pressure by a spring-loaded pressure relief valve located on the manway cover plate. Excess flow-check valves are installed on the liquid eduction and vapor lines of many tank cars in compressed gas service. These excess flow valves are intended to contain the tank contents in transit, in a wreck environment if the valve is sheared off, or during other incidents when uncontrolled release of product may occur. 

Specification 51 steel portable tanks having a design pressure of not less than 250 psig (1720 kPa) and equipped with a spring-loaded pressure relief device are authorized for shipment of methyl bromide. See 49 CFR 173.315 [7]. 

PSV An abbreviation for pressure safety valve, which is a type of spring-loaded pressure relief valve. It is activated by the static pressure upstream of the valve and characterized by its ability to open rapidly.
