Sponge bioassays

A number of tetramic acid derivatives acylated with a liposaccharide unit have recently been discovered in marine sponges. The first example was uncovered in the sponge Ancorina sp using a bioassay to detect inhibition of blastulation in starfish embryos. The structure of the compound (27), named ancorinoside A, was determined by spectroscopic techniques... [Pg.119]

By the bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract of the marine sponge Axinella weltneri, a new triterpene sodwanone S 138 with an uncommon cyclohexanooxepane system was isolated <2005JNP1284>. [Pg.84]

Bioassay guided fractionation of the methanol extract of an Indonesian sample of I. hasta resulted in the isolation of a total of eight bastadins representing each of the three structural motifs found in the series [128,129]. Bastadin 6 (114) was isolated as the major bioactive constituent of the sponge and inhibited the VEGF- and... [Pg.257]

Bioassay-guided fractionation of an aqueous extract from a Philippine Islands collection of the soft coral Lohophytum spp. yielded cembranoid diterpenes, Fig. (3), which exhibited moderate HIV-inhibitory activity in a cell-based in vitro anti-HIV assay [44], while new isomalabaricane triterpenes. Fig. (4), have been isolated from the sponge Stelletta spp. [45]. Other anti-HIV diterpenes also included the dolabellane diterpenes isolated from the Brazilian brown algae Dictyota pfaffi [46] and Dictyota menstrualis [47]. To investigate the effect of these diterpenes in the reverse transcription of the viral genomic RNA, the recombinant HIV-1 RT was assayed in vitro in the presence of each compound. All compounds inhibited the RNA-dependent DNA-polymerase activity of HIV-1 RT and consequently virus replication. [Pg.107]

Extracts of Cribrochalina sp, a marine sponge, displayed antifungal activity. Bioassay guided fractionation led to the isolation of cribrochalinamine /V-oxides A and B (21a,b). Structures of these compounds were determined using HRFABMS, and one- and two-dimensional JH and 13CNMR[118],... [Pg.189]

Plakinamine B (330) was isolated from a marine sponge Plakina sp., using bioassay-guided fractionation [695]. Its structure was determined using and 13 q NMR and UV. The hydrochloride salt of 330 inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans [695],... [Pg.273]
