Bacteria are prokaryotes, lacking well-defined nuclei and membrane-bound organelles, (Fig. 1.1) and with chromosomes composed of a single closed DNA circle. They come in many shapes and sizes, from minute spheres, cylinders and spiral threads, to flagellated rods, and filamentous chains. They are found practically everywhere on Earth and live in some of the most unusual and seemingly inhospitable places. [Pg.7]

There is a new technique that involves inserting barbed or spiral threads under the skin to tighten sagging tissue (Figures 29.12 and 29.13). These are known as Aptos threads or Russian threads, as in their current form they were designed by a Dr M Sulamanidze from Moscow. " The Aptos threads are inserted deeper than the phenol penetrates there is therefore no risk of interaction between the phenol, and the thread that would, in any case, resist it chemically. [Pg.231]

Elastomers are primarily composed of large molecules that tend to form spiral threads, similar to a coiled spring, that are attached to each other at infrequent intervals. As a small stress is applied, these coils tend to stretch or compress but exert an increasing resistance as additional stresses are applied. This property is illustrated by the reaction of an elastic band. [Pg.443]

The different spinning glands in the spider s abdomen produce different kinds of silks, such as draglines, frame threads, mooring radial threads, spiral threads, sticky material, egg cocoon, swathing bands and attachment discs. [Pg.299]

A typical web spider secretes different threads such as frame threads, mooring threads, radial threads, spiral threads and a hub for constructing orb-web. They also secrete threads such as attachment discs and draglines, as shown in Fig. 4.39. The radial threads converge in a central spot called the hub, which consists of... [Pg.299]

Get a drill, and drill some holes of different sizes and at different angles. Try different drill types, and different drill speeds. Observe how the drill cuts into the material. Does the drill point wander, or does it bite into the material cleanly What kind of chips form Are they wavy and flaky, or do they break off in small pieces Or does it form long spiral threads that wind up along the flutes of the drill bit What happens when you pull on these long spiral pieces Do they stretch and elongate (like that piece of silly putty we discussed), or do they simply break in half ... [Pg.142]

In dry-seal threads, the roots and crests engage first, eliminating spiral clearance. [Pg.622]

The requirements for a battery separator can best be understood in the context of how the separator is used. The conventional process (Fig. 1) for making spirally wound cells involves threading the separator (a) through a winding pin (b). [Pg.553]

The axon emerges from a neuron as a slender thread and frequently does not branch until it nears its target. In contrast to the dendrite and the soma, the axon is myelinated frequently, thus increasing its efficiency as a conducting unit. Myelin, a spirally wrapped membrane (see Ch. 4), is laid down in segments, or internodes, by oligodendrocytes in the CNS and by Schwann cells in the PNS. The naked regions of axon between adjacent myelin internodes are known as nodes of Ranvier (see below). [Pg.6]

The form taken by the distortion varies between types of polymer but generally it is helical. With polyolefins a feature resembling the thread of a screw may appear, and with polystyrene the extrudate may form a spiral with other melts, ripples or repetitive kinks like bamboo may be seen. For all melts, at rates well above the critical point, the helical nature becomes obscured by severe distortion which looks quite random. [Pg.168]

Criteria of extrudability, mouldability, spinnability and stretchability as used in practice are described (melt index, spiral length, mouldability index, melt strength, ultimate thread length, etc.). These criteria are based on the dimensionless parameters (numerics) of the processes. [Pg.799]
