Speed and safety

This complex subsequently reacts with other reagents in the solution to produce either an insoluble dimer product, which also adsorbs on the AW device surface, or a massive ion (l3 was used) that inserts into an ionic binding site in the surface film. Thus, the areal mass increase per bound analyte is significantly amplified. While these and other immunosensor detection schemes can involve rather complex reagent and/or buffer systems, the relative advantages of piezoelectric sensors in terms of cost, speed, and safety make them attractive alternatives to radioimmunoassay and other standard assay techniques. 

Speed and Safety are the most important goals during startup. 

LIF detection offered the possibiHty of real time, automated detection. Sequence information could be stored directly by computer, eHminating possible data transcription errors. The exposure time necessary when using radiolabels is eliminated with LIF detection since detection is real-time. Furthermore, software may be written for the interpretation of data, eHminating the need for skilled personnel to read the data. DNA sequencing with LIF detection offers substantial advantages over isotopic labeUng, with respect to speed and safety. Consequently, LIF detection is now the most common method of detection used for DNA sequencing. 

Because of their size, these molds are often stand-alone equipment packages and as such need to be sufficiendy robust to permit repeated daily process cycles with the minimum of maintenance downtime. They must offer the blade manufacturer the means to reliably produce blades with the minimum number of operators in the shortest possible time. Benefits gained with proper designed blades include reduced mold height to eliminate cumbersome platforms around the molds improved speed and safety of mold closing mechanisms accurate blade shape and blade edge tolerances and all electrical, vacuum, and other services within the structural framework. 

Most solids do not react rapidly with skin, but there are some exceptions, so it is always a good idea to remove the solid as quickly as possible. Washing with water may seem appropriate but some chemicals react with water so the best first action is to scrape the solid off the skin using a credit card or similar object. Scraping the solid into a beaker or onto a piece of paper is best, but don t delay scraping unnecessarily. Scraping onto an open lab bench or into a sink is less ideal, but speed and safety may trump ideality in these situations. After most of the solid is removed, flushing the skin with water is OK and appropriate. Report such incidents to your instructor, but do not delay treatment in order to do this. 

The difference between speeding and the other dangerous driving behaviors reflects a very complex relationship between speeding and safety, and between the motives that govern our speed and the motives that govern other aspects of our driving behavior. This chapter will focus on three speed issues how we select speed, its relationship to safety, and speed countermeasures.
