The ASTM D64fX)-04 specification covers plastics and products made from plastics that are designed to be composted in mimicipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities (80). Properties that are required to predict whether plastics products will compost satisfactorily, including biodegrading are specified. ASTM D6400. In 1999 ASTM announced its Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics (D6400-99). The standard establishes criteria to be met before a product can be labeled compostable. Briefly a product must, at minimum, satisfy ASTM tests showing conversion to carbon dioxide at 60% for a homopolymer or a statistical random copolymer and 90% for other types of copolymers and blends in 180 days or less, and leave no more than 10% of the original weight on a 2-mm screen. If carbon-14 tests are used a test period of 365 days is allowable. Environmental toxicity issues are also addressed, including limits for heavy metals. The American standard ASTM 6400 provides standard specifications for compostable plastics and products manufactured from these materials. ASTM 6400, like all other standards, states its scope of validity, defines its concepts, and states the specific requirements (here for compostable materials and/or products). Similar to DIN EN 13432, subsection 6 (Detailed Requirements) describes the chemical tests as well as the general proof of general biodegradability, followed by the test for total disintegration. However, ASTM 6400 provides little detailed information, but rather refers repeatedly to ASTM D6002 regarding test execution. [Pg.226]
