Titanium is a white metal and, when cold, is brittle and may be powdered. At a red heat it may be forged and drawn. The tensile strength of titanium is almost the same as that of steel, while its specific gravity (4.5) is almost two times less than that of steel. Hence, its specific strength (tensile strength/speciflc gravity) is 1000, which is considerably higher than that of 18/8 steel, which has a value of 700. Titanium is now available as plate, sheet and tube, and its use in chemical plant construction is considered common. [Pg.95]

Most of the drilling equipment components are made from AISI 4,100 and 4,300 series of steel alloys that are heat treated to specific strength and hardness necessary to their particular operation conditions. [Pg.1257]

In general, there are advantages and disadvantages to both assay formats and both are widely employed in pharmacological research. The specific strengths and weaknesses inherent in both approaches are discussed in more detail in Chapters 4 and 5. As a preface to the consideration of these two major formats, a potential issue with both of them should be considered namely, dissimulations between the concentrations of drugs added to the experimentally accessible receptor compartment and the actual concentration producing the effect. [Pg.35]

The introduction of large gas phase volumes into the polymer alters the physical characteristics of the material volume weight, permeability to fluids and gases, and physico-mechanical properties. Moreover, the properties of the polymer matrix itself are changed (owing to orientation effects, supermolecular structure of the polymer in the walls, ribs and tension bars of cells), which drives up the value of specific strength on impact, and results in anisotropy of elasticity. [Pg.100]

OS 92] [R 32] [P 72/The iodate-arsenous acid reachon proceeds to one of two stationary states in different parts of the capillary when an electrical field of specific strength is applied [68]. Accordingly, a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of reaction products is generated along the capillary. [Pg.561]
