Specific secondary metabolites

In the interdisciplinary field of biophysics and biotechnology, the bioeffects of electric field have received considerable interest for both fundamental studies on these interaction mechanisms and potential application. However, the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) on secondary metabolism in plant cell cultures and fermentation processes have been unknown. Therefore, it would be very interesting to find out whether PEF could be used as a new tool for stimulating secondary metabolism in plant cell cultures for potential application to the value-added plant-specific secondary metabolite production. Furthermore, if the PEF permeabilization and elicitation are discovered in a cell culture system, the combination of... [Pg.91]

Microbial production of secondary metabolites is also an important source of novel therapeutic agents. However, the physiological and biochemical factors that determine the onset of production of a specific secondary metabolite in a particular species are incompletely understood. Generally, a range of analytical techniques, often elaborate, time-consuming and involving extensive sample pre-treatment, have to be developed in order to monitor the details of the metabolic changes and substrate consumption that accompany secondary metabolite production. In order to provide rapid multi-parametric information about the microbial fermentation process, H HPLC-NMR has been applied to characterise microbial metabolites directly in the broth supernatants from a... [Pg.67]

Erratically occurring specific secondary metabolites, e.g., (i) 3-carbolines in both families (Sect. 4.1), (ii) cardenolides (Sect. 7.9.2), in the Solanaceae or (iii) 2-alkylpiperidines (animartinines Sect. 5.2.2), serotonin-hydroxycinnamic acid amides (ipobscurines Sect. 6.7.4) in the Convolvulaceae, are not taken into consideration here. [Pg.7]

However, there is no doubt that the presence of specific secondary metabolites makes a much more valuable contribution. Consequently, the following criteria for the selection of secondary metabolites to receive a more detailed treatment in this book reflect this opinion. However, it is necessary to take into account additional aspects ... [Pg.8]

Each lichen mycobirait prefers specially adapted culture conditions (such as nutrient medium, added sugars or polyols, pH, temperature, light, stress) to produce the specific secondary metabolites (Hager et al. 2008). Similarly, lichen tissue cultures, in many cases, can produce secondary substances (Yamamoto et al. 1985, 1993), but the chemistry is usually different from the chemosyndrome of the corresponding natural lichen thalli (Yamamoto et al. 1993). Lichenised Basidiomycotina do not contain lichen substances (Lumbsch 1998). [Pg.5]
