Specialty oligomers

Specialty oligomers and polyester acrylate oligomers for laminating adhesives which satisfy the requirement for cost effectiveness and high performance. 

Oligomers and Resins. Oligomers and resins used were Ebecryl 3700 epoxy acrylate, Radcure Specialties, Inc., Smyrna, GA 30080 Unicarb, which is 73% UVR 6128 (a cycloaliphatic epoxy), 26.5% polyol and 0.5% Silwet L-7602 (See under miscellaneous compounds), Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Co., Inc., Danbury, CT 06817-0001 and Heloxy 505 Modifier, Shell Chemical Co., Houston, TX 77210.

Lubricants are formulated products composed of a base stock, which is either a mineral or synthetic oil, and various specialty additives designed for specific performance needs. Additive levels in lubricants range from 1 to 25% depending on the application. Synthetic base stocks are oligomers of small molecules, synthesized to a defined molecular weight. Important performance indicators include viscosity index which measures the viscosity index behavior over a temperature range, oxidative stability, and pour point. The performance of synthetic and mineral oils (Morse, 1998 Shubkin, 1993) is summarized in Table 2.7. 

Polymerization of alkene monomers, with or without functional groups, are very important industrial processes. Until recently the use of homogeneous catalysts was restricted to relatively small-volume production of specialty dimers and oligomers. The manufacture of the two largest-tonnage plastics— polyethylene and polypropylene—has so far been based on heterogeneous catalytic processes.

The propensity of transition metal salts such as silver trifluoroacetate (AgTFA), copper acetylacetonate (CuACAC), and gold trichloride (AuCb) to induce molecular cationization is illustrated in Figure 42.19, for the polymer antioxydant Irganox 1010 (Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corporation) and for PS oligomers [304]. In the case of AgTFA, cluster ions and larger adduct ions of the type (M-i-Ag )+ are also visible in the mass spectra. This observation indicates that the silver atoms form clusters on the sample surface. 

The principal commercial aromatic isocyanates are toluene diisocyanate (TDI), polymeric isocyanate (PMDI), and its coproduct (MDI), but some specialty aromatic isocyanates and some aliphatic diisocyanates are also available. The latter are used in the manufacture of color stable pol5uirethanes. TDI is mainly produced as a 80 20 mixture of the 2,4- and the 2,6-isomers, but a 65 35 mixture of the same isomers, pure 2,4-TDI and a crude partially trimerized product, are also available. PMDI is a mixture of the MDI isomers and their higher oligomers, and MDI is mainly the 4,4 -diisocyanate. The principal commercially available isocyanates are listed in Table 2.

Thus, there is steady, although not very intensive, progress in the field of CROP of cyclic ethers. It can be expected that this trend will continue and new specialty polymers or oligomers will be created by combining the knowledge accumulated over several decades with new developments such as the AM polymerization mechanism.
