Special wastes consignment note

The movement of the waste will need to be documented with a transfer note under the Duty of Care Regulations 1991, or if it is a special waste, with a special waste consignment note under the Special Waste Regulations 1996. There is a statutory responsibility for the producer to keep these notes for a period of two years for waste transfer notes or three years for consignment notes. [Pg.320]

A person who produces special waste has to prepare six copies of a specified five part consignment note and complete some of the parts before the substance can be disposed of. Copies of the consignment note must go to the people who transfer the special waste from where it is produced to another place, to the disposal authority of the area in which it is to be disposed and to the carrier. The disposer has to complete the consignment note. Exceptions can be made for regular consignments. Special waste for disposal in another area must be referred to that particular authority. [Pg.62]

Special waste or hazardous waste is waste which meets the hazard criteria defined in the Special Waste Regulations 1996. The material can be described as dangerous, hazardous, or toxic waste. Because of the hazards of special waste the Regulations require that movement of such waste is tracked from source to final disposal by means of a consignment note system. Examples of Special Waste are asbestos, waste from a laboratory or waste from a hospital. [Pg.944]

The transfer of special waste is regulated by a system of consignment notes to ensure that waste can be tracked at every stage of its movement, from the time it is originally transferred to the point where it is finally disposed of at a suitably licensed site.
