Spathulenol

The main components of Salvia mirzayanii were Linalool, Linalyl acetate, a-Tei pinyl acetate, 5-Cadinene, Spathulenol, Cubenol and a-Cadinol. The extraction yield, based on hydrodistillatin was 2.2% (v/w), and based on the SFE varied in the range of 0.65-10.59% (v/w) under different conditions. [Pg.365]

The large cardamom pericarp (husk) yielded 0.18% volatile oil by the Clevenger hydrodistillation method. This oil was analysed for physical parameters, e.g. specific gravity (0.9148), refractive index (1.4733) and optical rotation (-7.700). The volatile oil was subjected to GC-MS analysis and 37 compounds were identified, constituting > 98% of the total oil. The major compounds characterized were 1,8-cineole (38.7%), [3-pinene (13.6%), a-terpineol (12.6%), spathulenol (8.3%), 4-terpineol (4.5%), ger-macrene D (3.0%), a-pinene (2.8%) and (3-selinene (2.7%). GC and GC-MS data revealed that 1,8-cineole content was less than 50% when compared with the seed oil. Table 4.5 shows the major constituents separated by GC-MS (Rout et al., 2003). Figure 4.1 gives the structures of the major chemical components in the volatile oil from seeds. [Pg.63]

However, this is an example of an essential oil in which the minor components are of great significance it contains a furocoumarin called bergaptene (0.2-0.5%), which is a phototoxic compound and needs to be used with caution. Many oils have it removed and are called FCF (furocoumarin-free) oils, even though this is technically a rectification of the whole oil. This is discussed under safety in Chapter 8. The odour of this oil is also influenced by the presence of trace components guaienol, spathulenol, nerolidol, farnesol and (i-sinensal. Box 7.8 shows safety data for bergamot oil and Box 7.9 shows a material data safety sheet. [Pg.160]

There are a number of allelochemicals among the mono-, sesqui-, and diterpenoids. In particular, plants in arid and semiarid regions produce diverse volatile terpenoids with allelopathic activity.5 Among the volatile monoterpenes, 1,8-cineole (4) and camphor (5) exhibit strong growth inhibitory effects on plants and are considered to be involved in plant competition. 1,4-Cineole (6), a minor isomer of 1,8-cineole, is a potent inhibitor of asparagine synthetase.6 -Menthane-3,8-diols (fir 7 and frw .r8), -menth-2-en-l-ols (cis 9 and trans 10), thymol (11), carvacrol (12), 1,8-cineole, cr-pinene (13), and /3-pinene (14) were isolated as allelopathic monoterpenes from Eucalyptus species.7 Eucalyptus trees also produce allelopathic sesquiterpenes including spathulenol (15), and a-, (3-, and 7-eudesmols (16-18).7... [Pg.540]

According to recent investigations, the commercially available oils derive from Artemisia herba-alba Asso (Morocco). Their qualitative composition is similar to the oil of Artemisia vulgaris, greater deviations have been observed quantitatively [165]. Nano et al. [166] demonstrated varying compositions in essential oils of various plant samples from Piedmont. Vulgarol, a bomane derivative, was detected as a new constituent in some of the oils. Spathulenol and a-cadinol, two sesquiterpene alcohols, as well as davanone were found by fork and co-workers [167, 168, 169]. [Pg.236]

Qccurance and Identification. An early report of cotton volatile composition by Minyard et al. (44) involved steam distillation of large quantities of leaves and flowers. Major compounds identified included the monoterpenes a-pinene, B-pinene, myrcene, trans-B-ocimene, and limonene ( 4). Several other monoterpene hydrocarbons were also present in low concentration. Since that report, many other terpenes have been identified in cotton essential oil steam distillates and solvent extracts. These compounds include cyclic hydrocarbons such as bisabolene, caryophyllene, copaene and humulene (45-47), the cyclic epoxide caryophyllene oxide (45), cyclic alcohols such as bisabolol, spathulenol, and the aromatic compound... [Pg.89]
