Researchers also used silane as a compatibilizing agent in the preparation of unsaturated polyester-clay nanocomposites [23]. A lot of commercially modified clays like the Closite series and Nanomer series are readily available in the market from Southern Clay Products and Nanomer Inc., respectively. 

A recent paper by Chiu and Chu [59] describes the preparation, carried out by solution blending, of PP nanocomposites with three different commercial organoclays, Cloisite 15A (15A), Cloisite 20A (20A), and Cloisite 30B (30B). These organoclays are produced by Southern Clay Products Inc. from Cloisite Na+ by cation exchange with M2(HT)2, for 15A...

RTP, based in Winona, MN, USA, was probably the first independent compounder to go into commercial production with nanocompounds. Most nanocomposites currently use nanoclay, although carbon nanotubes are becoming much more widespread. In the US, Southern Clay Products of Texas is a leading producer of nanoclays with products like Cloisite w hich are high aspect ratio additives based on montmorillonite, consisting of layered magnesium aluminium silicate platelets that have been surface treated to improve their compatibility with the polymer. 

GM has implemented some new applications for nanocomposites, including PP/nanoclay step-assists for its Safari and Chevrolet Astro medimn sized vans. The components were made using nanofillers from Southern Clay Products. 

Noble Polymers supplies a 6% nanoclay-PP composite for the structural seat back of the Honda Accura TL 2004 car. It replaces a 30% glass PP compound in the seat back. Noble Polymers is also targeting the replacement of 20% glass fibre reinforced PP in office furniture parts. Southern Clay Products supplies Cloisite nanocomposite external parts to General Motors for its Impala vehicle, in competition with talc-filled PP.
