This section successively reviews four cases of nuclear new build in different market structures first, the US nuclear merchant South Texas Project of the NRG Energy group second, the consumers consortium project of Okililuoto in Finland third, the large vertical company nuclear project (EDF s Elamanville EPR) and fourth, some hypothetical projects from oligopolisitic medium-sized vertically integrated companies such as are likely to occur in the UK. [Pg.136]

In addition to the nuclear plant orders in US states which are still regulated, some announcements of nuclear projects by non-vertically integrated producers in liberalized US markets in 2006-07 seemed to signal the renaissance of nuclear orders in such markets in a merchant framework. The rationale to invest in nuclear build in liberalized markets lies in the opportunity to earn potentially greater revenues than under the cost of service regulation (Lacy, 2006). As well as the South Texas Project (STP) which is studied next, four other projects have been announced in these liberalized markets. ... [Pg.136]

The South Texas Project of two ABWRs, each of 1,200 MW, is promoted by an independent producer the NRG company. NRG has been the first unregulated company to apply for a joint construction and operation license (COL in September 2007. The project financing arrangement of the STP is made possible by different federal guarantees, which aim to alleviate the construction and regulatory risks, and also by a series of PPAs with creditworthy parties. Indeed the project will be backed by long-term fixed-price contracts with municipalities and historic suppliers. [Pg.137]

Over the last years, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has established the legal prerequisites of "Risk-Informed Regulation" to be applied to the procedure in line with the atomic energy legislation. This means, regulation which is concentrated on risk relevant items. Currently, these prerequisites are being put into practice in the "South Texas Project". [Pg.146]

The projected distribution of B. anthracis in Mexico (Fig. 7B) suggests that the disease is present along the U.S. border near central and western Texas, central Arizona, and south central California. In each of these locations, the distribution in Mexico is predicted to be a southward continuation of predicted areas in the United States Beyond the border regions, the prediction reaches south into central Mexico as far as the state of Puebla. Although limited data were available to validate the model results for Mexico, the model accurately predicted the area surrounding a farm with laboratory-confirmed... [Pg.79]

Figure 8B illustrates the potential distribution of B. anthracis in 2050. Although the south-to-north corridor is still visible, there is an apparent gap in northern Texas, with more loss of spore-promoting habitat in southernmost Texas. To illustrate this better, I recoded presence and absence for both the current-day prediction and the future projection using the classification. I selected a threshold of six or more model agreement from the best subset of each time period and recoded all values of six or more to a score of 1 to define presence in the current-day models and a score of 4 in the future models. In the current-day model, values of five or less were scored as a zero ... [Pg.81]

Within the malaria field, as mentioned, a few projects have delivered hits through target-based approaches (e.g., Pf (P. falciparum) DHODH). The DHODH project team, led by Prof. Margaret Phillips from the University of Texas South Western, ran a HTS of a compound collection against jy DHODH. They isolated several series of which one, a triazolopyrimidine, was selected for follow-up. This ultimately led to delivery of a preclinical candidate that, in 2014, delivered a positive proof of principle in a human challenge trial. This will be documented later as a specific case study. [Pg.723]

EPRI Studies. In 1987, EPRI contracted with Fluor Daniel and Destec to conduct a detailed technical and economic analysis of IGCC power generation based on 400-MW plants for both Texas lignite and Wyoming subbituminous coal (9). Central and South West Services, Houston Lighting and Power, Texas Utilities Electric Company, and the Salt River Project also participated in this analysis. [Pg.187]

Talc is mined and produced in large quantities in the United States (mostly in Montana, New York, Texas, and Vermont). Talc is also found in abundance in Canada, China, Japan, the Italian Alps, the French Pyrenees, Russia, Brazil, and South Korea. The supply of talc is rather large and is projected to meet the growth in demand. [Pg.223]
