The biotic and abiotic samples were collected during the 1992-1993, 1993 1994, 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 austral summer seasons around Potter Cove, King George Island and South Shetland Islands (Figure 6.2). Samples collected during the mentioned austral summers included ... [Pg.162]

The source mechanisms obtained are quite variable but consistent with the active tectonic processes and the complicated structure of the South Shetland Island region. The mechanisms around Elephant Island reflect the influence of the Elephant triple junction, with the intersection of the Shackleton Fracture Zone, the South Shetland Trench, and the South Scotia Ridge. In the forearc, north to the South Shetland Islands, the solutions obtained by Guidarelli and Panza (2006) seem to confirm the presence of active convergence along the South Shetland subduc-tion zone, while Plasencia (2006) evidences the presence of both transpressive and transtensive... [Pg.2157]

According to Baeza et al. (1994), the radioactive contamination of sea and land in the Antarctic regions derives from the fallout of atmospheric atomic explosions executed since 1945, apart from emissions made by nuclear and radioactive facilities. The authors examined samples of U. antartica collected near the Spanish Antarctic Base, Juan Carlos I, situated on Livingston Island in the South Shetland archipelago in... [Pg.268]

Fig. 1.2 James Weddell (1787-1834) and Matthew Brisbane were hunting seals in the South Shetland and South Orkney Islands in 1823 when they turned their ships south and sailed into a large embayment in the land mass of Antarctica now known as the Weddell Sea. They reached a point even farther south than Captain Cook when they decided to turn back. They were fortunate to have penetrated this far into the Weddell Sea and to have escaped unhurt because the pack ice in the Weddell Sea is notorious for trapping ships (Photo by the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, used here with permission)...
