In our approach to membrane breakdown we have only taken preliminary steps. Among the phenomena still to be understood is the combined effect of electrical and mechanical stress. From the undulational point of view it is not clear how mechanical tension, which suppresses the undulations, can enhance the approach to membrane instability. In some major reactions, the iron oxide is the starting material for the actual catalyst which is active iron metal. Quite often both the metal and its oxide can catalyse the reaction, but the activity and selectivity of the metal is greater. Furthermore, the oxide catalyst may be reduced to some intermediate product during the reaction, particularly a reaction involving H2 and high temperature. This may lead to loss of catalytic activity as the intermediate may be a less suitable catalyst than the starting oxide or the actual metal.
