Solvent transport, storage, recovery and disposal

The loss of crude oil from the Exxon Valdez which subsequently contaminated large areas of the coastline in Alaska [1]. 

In November 1984 a storage depot near Mexico City containing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) ignited following a large gas leak killing 550 people with a further 2000 injured [2]. 

In July 1978 a road tanker carrying liquefied propylene burst into flames whilst passing a campsite near San Carlos in Spain killing 215 people [3]. 

However, considering the regularity and distance solvents are transported, coupled with the large number of storage facilities throughout the world, it is a credit to the industry and the current guidelines and regulations that such instances are so rare. 

The recommendations and regulations governing solvent transportation are now discussed in origin and detail. Solvent storage regulations and guidelines are dealt with later.
