As the name implies, a conditional solubility product is one whose value depends on solution conditions other than the presence of a common ion. Conditional solubility products are useful when determining the solubility of precipitates whose ions interact with solution constituents through reactions such as complexation or hydrolysis. This type of behavior is indeed the rule rather than the exception for the systems encountered in natural waters and treatment processes. Also, in many analytical measurements the total concentration of species is determined rather than the free ion concentration. [Pg.253]

The intramolecular parameters kf,ro, kg, and 0q from the AMBER force field [21, 22] were used. The oxygen atoms of alcohols and ethers were described by the OPLS parameters [17,18]. The Lennard-Jones parameters for halogens and the atoms of the aliphatic groups were optimized to reproduce the experimentally measured solubilities of methane and its halogenated derivatives in water and hexane, separately [23]. The resulting parameters do not follow the standard combination rules because we were unable to find a set of parameters consistent with the rules which would yield sufficiently accurate solubilities of the solutes in both phases. A similar difficulty was encountered in other studies of interfacial systems, in which the united atom representation was used to describe nonpolar molecules [24, 25]. [Pg.37]

As a general rule, cellulosics do not constitute any major use but are encountered daily in a number of smaller items such as name plates, electrical component cases, high impact lenses, and other applications requiring a transparent plastic with good impact resistance. Weathering properties of the materials are good, particularly that of propionate, but overall chemical resistance is not comparable to other thermoplastics. Water and salt solutions are readily handled, but any appreciable quantity of acid, alkali, or solvent can have an adverse effect on the plastic. [Pg.699]
