Solid screw conveyors

Spray Dryers A spray diyer consists of a large cyhndrical and usu ly vertical chamber into which material to be dried is sprayed in the form of small droplets and into which is fed a large volume of hot gas sufficient to supply the heat necessary to complete evaporation of the liquid. Heat transfer and mass transfer are accomphshed by direct contact of the hot gas with the dispersed droplets. After completion of diying, the cooled gas and solids are separated. This may be accomplished partially at the bottom of the diying chamber by classification and separation of the coarse dried particles. Fine particles are separated from the gas in external cyclones or bag collectors. When only the coarse-particle fraction is desired for fini ed product, fines may be recovered in wet scrubbers the scrubber liquid is concentrated and returned as feed to the diyer. Horizontal spray chambers are manufactured with a longitudinal screw conveyor in the bottom of the diying chamber for continuous removal of settled coarse particles. [Pg.1229]

When the solid is one of the reactants, such as in ore roasting, the flow must be continuous and precise in order to maintain constant conditions in the reactor. The negative system usually sucks on a cyclone and/or filter/receiver mounted above the receiving storage hopper or bin. Solids are usually sent down to the hopper with a rotary air lock feeder. Screw conveyors, also called worm conveyors, are used for materials that are free flowing. The basic principle of the screw conveyor has been known since the time of Archimedes. The modem conveyor consists of a helical screw rotating in a U-shaped trough. They can be used horizontally or, with some loss of capacity, at an incline to lift materials. Screw conveyors are less efficient than belt conveyors, due to the friction between the solids and the flights of the screw and the trough, but are cheaper and easier to maintain. They are used to convey solids over short distances, and when some elevation (lift) is required. They can also be used for delivering a metered flow of solids. [Pg.482]

This is the process in which soft lead (99.97% pure) is converted into lead oxide. To achieve this, solid bars of soft lead are melted at 400-425°C and the molten lead is oxidized to form lead oxide. The lead oxide so formed, along with some percentage (about 26%) of free lead, is then passed into a cyclone separator and a bag filter. This step is important as it allows the particles of lead oxide to be separated from the air stream in these equipments. The separated lead oxide is then transferred using screw conveyors into storage tanks, called silos. However, air emissions from the bag filter contain lead particles, a source of pollution. [Pg.1307]

It is possible to operate a fluidized bed in either batch or continuous mode. Strictly, most batch applications are in tact operated in semibatch mode where the solids are treated as a batch but the fluidizing medium enters and leaves the bed continuously. In the case ot gas-solid beds used in termentation (see Chapter 6), the fluidizing gas is recirculated although reactants and products flow continuously. In true continuous operation the solids may be ted into a fluidized bed via screw conveyors, weigh teeders or pneumatic conveying lines and can be withdrawn trom the bed via standpipes or by flowing over weirs. [Pg.5]
