Solid lied process temperatures

Design Methods for Calciners In indirect-heated calciners, heat transfer is primarily by radiation from the cyhnder wall to the solids bed. The thermal efficiency ranges from 30 to 65 percent. By utilization of the furnace exhaust gases for preheated combustion air, steam production, or heat for other process steps, the thermal efficiency can be increased considerabfy The limiting factors in heat transmission lie in the conductivity and radiation constants of the shell metal and solids bed. If the characteristics of these are known, equipment may be accurately sized by employing the Stefan-Boltzmann radiation equation. Apparent heat-transfer coefficients will range from 17 J/(m s K) in low-temperature operations to 85 J/(m s K) in high-temperature processes. [Pg.1034]

Another adsorbate whose adsorption on the graphite basal plane has been the subject of a number of investigations is benzene [41]. This molecule lies (mostly) flat on the surface at temperatures up to 120 K and forms solid films that are commensurate with the basal plane lattice, but its size is such that the lattice size is ylSx- 5 at temperatures up to 2D melting. However, the melting process for this... [Pg.603]

For most substances, including water (see Fig. 10.23c), atmospheric pressure occurs somewhere between the triple-point pressure and the critical pressure, so in our ordinary experience, all three phases—gas, liquid, and solid—are observed. For a few substances, the triple-point pressure lies above P = 1 atm, and under atmospheric conditions, there is a direct transition called sublimation from solid to gas, without an intermediate liquid state. Carbon dioxide is such a substance (see Fig. 10.23b) its triple-point pressure is 5.117 atm (the triple-point temperature is —56.57°C). Solid CO2 (dry ice) sublimes directly to gaseous CO2 at atmospheric pressure. In this respect, it differs from ordinary ice, which melts before it evaporates and sublimes only at pressures below its triple-point pressure, 0.0060 atm. This fact is used in freeze-drying, a process in which foods are frozen and then put in a vacuum chamber at a pressure of less than 0.0060 atm. The ice crystals that formed on freezing then sublime, leaving a dried food that can be reconstituted by adding water. [Pg.432]

The nature of the lowest-lying excited states of the fullerenes has been difficult to identify with much certainty. From Shpol skii-type luminescence spectra recorded at 1.5 K it has been concluded that the first-excited singlet state in C70 is of A 2 character. The origins of the lowest energy transitions in Ceo, namely Si(T]g) and S2(Gg), have been assigned on the basis of fluorescence and excitation spectra, supported by theoretical calculations. " The luminescence properties and relaxation dynamics of single crystals of Qo have been described while related measurements have been made for solid films of Ceo " Similar studies have reported the luminescence spectral properties of 50 trapped inside the cavities of NiY zeolites. An analysis of the fine structure of electron-vibrational spectra has been made for 50 and its derivatives in a solid toluene matrix. The rate of triplet energy transfer between fullerenes in toluene solution has been measured as a function of temperature and used to derive thermodynamic parameters for the transfer process. ... [Pg.39]
