According to the aggregation state of the component elements and the method selected for starting and performing their reaction, several preparative procedures can be considered, such as melting (direct reaction in the liquid state), solid-state synthesis (mechanical alloying), combustion synthesis, etc. 

In a trivial application of this method, one could consider the synthesis of carbon dioxide from methane as a combustion synthesis. This trivial example provides some framework for additional insights into the solid-state case. The balanced reaction for methane reacting with oxygen is... 

Four different routes were employed for the synthesis of iron-oxide-based redox water-sphtting materials Solid-State Synthesis (SSS), Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS), Gel Combustion (GC) and Aerosol Spray Pyrolysis (ASP) [8]. These synthesis methods were chosen with the rationale to exploit particular characteristics of each one for the synthesis of products with tunable oxygen vacancies concentration. An important topic of research is the introduction of the catalyst in the microreactor. In brief solid catalysts can be incorporated on the interior of micromachined reaction channels, prior to or after closure of the channel, by a variety of strategies anodic oxidation, plasma-chemical oxidation, flame combustion synthesis, sol-gel techniques, impregnation, wash coating, (electro-)plating, aerosols, brushing, chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition and nanoparticle deposition or self-assembly. Some of these methods can be applied in combination with photolithography or shadow masking. 

Flame spray pyrolysis and ultrasonic spray combustion represent other methods leading to perovskites with comparable morphologies with those produced by solid-sohd reactions and solution combustion synthesis [23].
