Social structure, levels

Several authors have investigated the role of juvenile hormone (JH) in hydrocarbon signatures. Sledge et al. (2004) performed one such study based on measuring the size of the corpora allata as an indicator of JH levels. Since caste determination depends strictly on the colony social structure, it can be assumed that topical JH application mimics natural caste development and thus modifies the cuticular caste-specific odor. A colony or other type of social structure acts in a coordinated way because information flows both horizontally (at the same level) and vertically (between levels). The same is true within a cell, within a tissue, or within an organism. The social structure thus acts as an entity unto itself with independent and identifiable organization, actions, and input-output relations. Taken another step farther, the definition of BU extends to symbiotic relationships, parasite-host pairs, and predators with prey. Indeed, each of these has predictive physical and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli (Grene, 1987). These will be considered further in Part III of this text. 

Additional system safety requirements and constraints, including those on operations and maintenance or upgrades will be used in the design of the safety control structure at the organizational and social system levels above the physical system. There is no one correct safety control structure what is practical and effective will depend greatly on cultural and other factors. Some general principles that apply to all safety control structures are described in chapter 13. These principles need to be combined with specific system safety requirements and constraints for the particular system involved to design the control structure. 

One cannot, of course, leave the analysis of general frameworks , scenarios , inferential structures and selective misperception at the social psychological level. One must understand the bases of the selection in terms of more long-term values and interests before doing this, however, we must see how the perceptual basis of the inventory was developed by means of more permanent opinions and attitudes. This is the question taken up in the next chapter. 

Awareness of checks on compliance with policies was socially structured, largely according to grade of staff. All managers were aware of checks and so were the majority of supervisors and safety representatives. But only 62 per cent of the workforce knew that there were checks that the policies and rules were adhered to. At a departmental level civil engineers were most aware of checks...

This chapter provides a brief overview of the most important sources of rhetorical uncertainty in technical documentation in the workplace the dynamic uncertainty of hazardous environments the variability and unreliability of human performance the uncertainty of what one agency calls premium data uncertainty in social structures and organizations and the rhetorical incompleteness of any single viewpoint. As the examples in this chapter demonstrate, the material and institutional uncertainty of hazardous environments affects documentation practices at all levels. But documentation practices can also contribute to uncertainty, particularly when writers depend too heavily on agency conventions to structure recommendations and conclusions.
