Smart Scale-up

Different methods for scale-out have been collected and presented (Lob et al. 2006a). The two main methods are a smart scale-up, at best after having intensified the process, or the internal numbering-up concept. The first route was shown long ago by the Merck production case for an organometallic reaction, changing from micro- to mini-mixers (Krummradt et al. 2000). Another pilot microstructured reactor uses a smart scale-up of the reactor plate dimensions by a factor of 3.3, each for the width and channel length (see Fig. 13). Stacking further plates is here one concept for future production reactors with another tenfold increase in structured area. 

The first one could be called Tow-cost smart textiles that will be produced for the general public and integrated mostly into clothes and home textiles the second one will be dedicated to special uses with higher cost and better added value. Today we can see just a few products available in the market smart textiles have not yet been fuUy developed, particularly from the point of view of reliability, and they are not really ready for the market. There are hundreds and hundreds of prototypes that are more or less reliable, in research laboratories, but the scale-up has not yet been done. Therefore, an important effort is necessary to put some of those prototypes to the market, to make them more robust and reliable and probably most importandy to produce them in large series at low cost.
