Slurry high-concentration

If /tpias, = constant, it is a Bingham plastic. This class of materials includes mineral slurries, highly concentrated suspensions of fine particles, meat soup extracts and the activated sludge in waste water purification. If the yield value is first exceeded at a particular shear rate, this is termed Herschel-Buckley viscosity behavior, an example being tomato soup concentrate [36]. 

In the equation referred to above, it is assumed that there is 100 percent transmission of the shear rate in the shear stress. However, with the slurry viscosity determined essentially by the properties of the slurry, at high concentrations of slurries there is a shppage factor. Internal motion of particles in the fluids over and around each other can reduce the effective transmission of viscosity efficiencies from 100 percent to as low as 30 percent. 

Bingham-plastic slurries require a shear stress diagram showing shear rate vs. shear stress for the slurry in order to determine the coefficient of rigidity, T], which is the slope of the plot at a particular concentration. This is laboratory data requiring a rheometer. These are usually fine solids at high concentrations. 

Calcium-sodium lignosulfonate is a better retarding additive when high concentrations of bentonite are to be used in the design of the cement slurry. 

Bentonite is dry blended to the cement. The addition of bentonite requires more water. Bentonite has been used up to 25% by weight. The additive also increases the viscosity of the slurry. High amounts of bentonite increase the permeability and reduce the final strength, however. Therefore high concentrations of bentonite are not recommended. 

Another method of manufacturing polypropylene employs the liquid monomer as the polymerization solvent. In adsorption studies from saline environments it is necessary to prepare the water-soluble polymer and peptized montmorillonite in fresh water at high concentrations and to add each to a saline solution.
