On the environmental side, it turns out that the surfaces of oceans and lakes are usually coated with natural films, mainly glycoproteins [8]. As they are biological in origin, the extent of such films seems to be seasonal. Pollutant slicks, especially from oil spills, are of increasing importance, and their cleanup can present interesting surface chemical problems. [Pg.104]

Regardless of the source, the resultant oil slicks are essentially surface phenomena that are affected by several transportation and transformation processes. With respect to transportation, the principal agent for the movement of slicks is the wind, but length scales are important. Whereas small (i.e. relative to the slick size) weather systems, such as thunderstorms, tend to disperse the slick, cyclonic systems can move the slick essentially intact. Modem oil spill-dispersant formulations are concentrated blends of surface-active agents (surfactants) in a solvent carrier system. The effects on dispersion efficiency of mixing jet pressure, mixing jet flow rate, jet standoff distance, and vessel speed were evaluated. The system operates with a nozzle pressure of 7000 kPa, a flow rate of 55 liter/min per nozzle, and nozzles positioned approximately 0.6 m from the water surface.
