Comparisons Between Size-Segregated Resuspended Soil Samples and Ambient Aerosols in the Western United States... [Pg.269]

Dibenzo[a,/]pyrene, a potent mutagen in the MCL-5 assay, was not detected in this analysis of SRM 1649. However, this 6-ring PAH XXIX was identified (but not quantified) by comparison to an authentic standard by Allen and co-workers (1998) in their analysis of size-segregated aerosols in urban Boston ambient air. Furthermore, in their August 1994 study of biologically active, particle-associated PAHs in ambient Riverside, California, Atkinson and Arey (1997) measured concentrations of 18, 20, and 15 pg m-3 of this compound for one daytime and two nighttime sampling events, respectively. These concentrations were 40-50% of the BaP concentrations in the same aerosol samples. [Pg.484]

Analyses of such radioactive aerosols were performed by Yu et al. (1993) at Chin-Shan Nuclear Power Plant, NPP in Taiwan, comprising a 636-MWe boiling water reactor (BWR) that has been in operation since 1977. They used Andersen ambient cascade impactors (1 ACFM normal cascade impactors at an airflow rate of 28.3 1 min ) with a preseparator to discriminate large particles with an aerodynamic diameter greater than 10 pm. For the segregation of smaller size aerosol particles in the accumulation mode, they applied a low-pressure adaptor to the Andersen cascade impactor. At an airflow rate of 3 lmin the effective cutoff aerodynamic diameter of sampled aerosols by the low-pressure Andersen cascade impactor (LPI) was between 0.08 and 35 pm. Fission products including and " La and the ac-... [Pg.46]

Atmospheric Aerosol Sulfate. Isotope measurements of non-seasalt sulfate in marine aerosols (24.52.631 require that sulfate from sea spray be either physically or mathematically removed from the sample medium. Mathematically, mass balance relationships are used to correct the value for the presence of seasalt sulfate in the sample. Physical means employ impactors or cyclone separators to segregate particles based on size so that value for non-seasalt sulfate can be directly measured. [Pg.375]
