The force effect is applicable to investigation of the mechanical properties of nanomaterials [28, 29]. CNTs may consist of just one layer (i.e. single-walled carbon nanotubes, SWCNTs), two layers (DWCNTs) or many layers (MWCNTs) and per definition exhibit diameters in the range of 0.7 < d < 2 nm, 1 < d < 3 nm, and 1. 4 < d < 150 nm, respectively. The length of CNTs depends on the synthesis technique used (Section 1.1.4) and can vary from a few microns to a current world record of a few cm [16]. This amounts to aspect ratios (i.e. length/diameter) of up to 107, which are considerably larger than those of high-performance polyethylene (PE, Dyneema). The aspect ratio is a crucial parameter, since it affects, for example, the electrical and mechanical properties of CNT-containing nanocomposites. 

Metallic nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit nanoscale dimensions comparable with the dimensions of redox proteins. In 2007, a report on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) described the reaction with singlet oxygen [66]. Purification was simplified due to the contrasting solubility properties of unfunctionalized and oxyfunctionalized SWCNTs, although it was uncertain whether the SWCNT peroxides were formed from a [2 + 2]-cycload-dition, a [2 + 4]-cydoaddition, or both [66]. Subsequent reports found SWCNTs to be of very low chemical reactivity with 102 [67, 68], Rather, SWCNTs were proposed to physically quench singlet oxygen (to convert 02 to 302) with rate constants on the order of 108 M 1 s 3.

The obtained temperature dependencies had shown that the quantity of desorbed hydrogen is increased with increasing of the temperature for all carbon samples (Fig. 2). Maximal hydrogen content (0.92 % wt.) was registered for the soot collected at the outlet surface of the fullerene synthesis chamber. By the method of electron microscopy it was detected that this sample contained 9% of fullerenes and more than 40% of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT).

It is well known that catalyst support plays an important role in the performance of the catalyst and the catalyst layer. The use of high surface area carbon materials, such as activated carbon, carbon nanofibres, and carbon nanotubes, as new electrode materials has received significant attention from fuel cell researchers. In particular, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have unique electrical and electronic properties, wide electrochemical stability windows, and high surface areas. Using SWCNTs as support materials is expected to improve catalyst layer conductivity and charge transfer at the electrode surface for fuel cell oxidation and reduction reactions. Furthermore, these carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could also enhance electrocatalytic properties and reduce the necessary amount of precious metal catalysts, such as platinum.
