In some cases, silicone is as effective when blended into an adhesive formulation as when it is applied separately as a primer. For siliconecoupling agents, moisture adsorbed on the substrate plays an important role in attaching the silicone molecule through hydrolysis. The opposite end of the molecule contains a chemical group such as a vinyl or amine, which is reactive with the epoxy, polyester, or other resin that is to be adhered to the substrate. In this manner, a single layer of silicone molecules couples the resin to the substrate. In addition to bond strength, moisture resistance also improves [3]. [Pg.145]

Glass fibres are used mostly in bundles and the load transfer is complicated by voids and spaces between each single filament which are not filled up with hydration products (Bentur 1986a, 1986b). The quality of the interface layer with respect to the pull-out resistance is also dependent on the hydration conditions of the cement paste. The duration of cure in high humidity plays an important role in appropriate filling of the spaces around single filaments. [Pg.232]
