A similar flow approach but in the area of solid transport was reported by Ajmera et al. [39], They also used suction for the fast exchange of catalyst powder in a single-channel reactor applied for catalyst testing (Figure 3.3). For this purpose, they applied below atmospheric pressure at the reactor exit to draw in a defined amount of catalyst powder in a flat fixed bed. Over-pressure was applied in order to reverse this procedure after testing was finished. 

As a result, no temperature increase due to the exothermal chemical process was observed. With this single-channel reactor, a phosgene productivity of 3.5 kg per year is projected for continuous operation.

The preceding discussion shows that the custom single channel reactor gave the expected low axial dispersion of injected reactants, which is consistent with the analysis of axial dispersion of Newtonian fluids in circular tubes as documented by Aris [18, 20]. However, experiments with different materials of construction demonstrated a variable lag time between the injection of a reactant pulse and its arrival at the analytical sample point as a function of the material of construction. The impact of this observation is that only certain materials of construction may be used for high throughput serial screening by injection of reactant pulses, dependent upon the chemistry employed. 

Research supporting the development of a compact water gas shift (WGS) reactor subsystem included catalyst screening studies, kinetic model development, and test reactor design and performance evaluation. Water gas shift catalysts obtained from commercial and other developers were converted into an engineered form and tested versus temperature, space velocity, and steam-to-gas ratio in single-channel reactors. Both base metal and precious metal catalyst formulations were included in the studies.

Beretta, Forzatti and co-workers also studied the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane and propane in short contact time reactors. Experiments were first performed in an isothermal, single channel reactor with an annular configuration (wherein the fluodynamics were simple, mass transfer coefficients were known and catalyst temperature was well controlled and easily measured, as illustrated in the following) the comparison between the results obtained in the absence of the catalyst with those obtained with increasing amounts of catalyst confirmed that olefins were uniquely produced via gas-phase reactions, while the Pt/Al203 catalyst was a non-selective oxidation catalyst (producing only COx, H2 and H2O).
