Silver compounds polymerization

Catalysts. Silver and silver compounds are widely used in research and industry as catalysts for oxidation, reduction, and polymerization reactions. Silver nitrate has been reported as a catalyst for the preparation of propylene oxide (qv) from propylene (qv) (58), and silver acetate has been reported as being a suitable catalyst for the production of ethylene oxide (qv) from ethylene (qv) (59). The solubiUty of silver perchlorate in organic solvents makes it a possible catalyst for polymerization reactions, such as the production of butyl acrylate polymers in dimethylformamide (60) or the polymerization of methacrylamide (61). Similarly, the solubiUty of silver tetrafiuoroborate in organic solvents has enhanced its use in the synthesis of 3-pyrrolines by the cyclization of aHenic amines (62). 

Richards et at. carried out extensive studies on the use of mercury,2 6 277 lead278 279 and silver compounds to terminate anionic polymerization and form polymeric organometallic species which can be used to initiate polymerization.

Coupling to produce dimeric product was a side reaction in these systems also, e.g. 75 % dimer formation was reported for poly(styryl)lithium and 23 % dimer formation with the poly(styryl)-Grignard reagent 326). However, it should be noted that the only reported characterizations of these reactions were size exclusion chromatography traces and silver catalyzed polymerization of tetrahydrofuran using the polymeric halogen compounds as co-initiator. 

OTHER COMMENTS silver metal and soluble silver compounds have applications in the following list of common operations used in the manufacture of silver nitrate for use in photography, mirrors, inks, dyes, and porcelain used in the manufacture of silver salts as catalysts in oxidation-reduction and polymerization reactions also utilized in chemical synthesis, in glass manufacture, in silver-plating, in photography, as laboratory reagents, and in medicine. 

The incorporation of a silver compound in PMMA showed its suitability to form a membrane with higher selectivity by forming complexes with oleflnic double bonds. Triphenylbismuth oxide [7173-99-1/, C gH BiO, has been prepared from triphenylbismuth dicyanide [41083-16-3], C2QH25B1N2, and mercuric oxide (151), and from triphenylbismuth dichloride and moist silver oxide (152). With respect to the initiation of cationic chain polymerizations, the reaction of chlorine-terminated azo compounds with various silver salts has been thoroughly studied. ACPC, a compound often used in condensation type reactions discussed previously, was reacted with Ag X , X, being BF4 [10,61] or SbFa [11,62].
