This free silicon layer forms a dark-brown powder, which is stable under nitrogen, oxidizes rapidly in air with ignition, and reacts spontaneously with alcohol or water. It is identical with the scaly silicon, prepared by Kautsky (see... [Pg.109]

Silicone liquids are used to protect skin. Nutrient facecreams, theatre makeup, lipstick containing these liquids are resistant to the effects of moisture and warmth. Protective creams used to protect hands from salts, acids, alkali and other irritants contain up to 25% of liquid oligoorganosiloxanes. Oligoorganosiloxanes are also used as waterproofing preparations for keeping hair in shape. Liquid oligoorganosiloxanes are used to treat skin (e.g. for professional dermatitis) there are instances of positive effect silicone preparations have on eczema and other conditions. [Pg.472]

The elements can be obtained by reduction of oxides or halides. Highly divide carbon black is used as a catalyst and black pigment, and impure carbon (coke) for reducing some metal oxides (e.g., in the manufacture of iron). Pure silicon prepared by reduction of SiCl4 with Mg is used in electronics (silicon chips) although much larger quantities of impure Si are used in steels. [Pg.155]

If attention at first is confined to the production of methyl silicone from the previously accepted raw materials, the chemical processes must include reduction of silica to silicon, preparation of the methyl chloride from methane or methanol, reaction of the methyl chloride with silicon, and hydrolysis of the methylchlorosilanes. If the same conventions are used as in the discussion of the,Grignard method, and the methanol process for methyl chloride is elected, the steps are ... [Pg.96]

Since the previous protocol led to low precursor conversions, we turned our attention to the second system, starting from precursor M and excess L H (Scheme 4). To confirm the validity of working off stoichiometry, we plotted in Fig. 9 the evolution of the molar mass and polymer content of an hybrid silicone prepared from precursor M and by fractionated addition of L H. The molar masses increase smoothly up to the end of the L H addition. In parallel, the polymer content grows more quickly up to a constant level. [Pg.129]
