Silicone oils, dimethylpolysiloxanes

Anti-foaming agents are food additives that prevent the formation of foam or reduce foaming, for example fatty acid esters of polyoxyethylene sorbitans (E432-E436) and silicone oils (dimethylpolysiloxane, E900,11-78). 

Toluene was of analytical grade and used without further purification. Water was de-ionized by an ion-exchanger. The silicone oils (dimethylpolysiloxanes tvith trimethylsilyl-endgroups) being of technical grade are manufactured by Wacker-Chemie GmbH, Munich (FRG). 

Intensive investigations have shown that specific silica-silicone mixtures or paraffin oil systems are considerably more universal in their applicability and that their effectiveness is independent of both water hardness and the nature of the surfactant-builder system employed [31-33]. Therefore, most heavy-duty detergents in Europe have silicone oil and/or paraffins as foam depressors. Soap has almost lost its importance as a foam regulator. Silica-silicone systems, frequently called silicone antifoams, are usually commercially available as concentrated powders. The key silicone oils used for antifoams are dimethylpolysiloxanes.

There were several significant consequences resulting from these classification procedures. Phases that have identical chromatographic behavior also have identical constants. The linear dimethylpolysiloxanes are liquid at room temperature, up to molecular weights on the order of 500,000. This is their most striking property. The range of viscosities is enormous, starting at 0.65 c St. for hexamethyldisiloxane and increasing to values which are greater than can be measured by viscometry methods now available. The dimethylpolysiloxane oils are stable in the open air, up to 150 °C, and in a closed system, up to 200 °C. In a vacuum or under an inert gas, they are stable up to 300 °C. The methylphenyl and methyl(3-trifluoropropyl)silicone oils are more stable than those made up of dimethylpolysiloxane these are stable up to 250 °C in the open air and up to 400 C under inert gas.
