Passive films formed on a silicon surface in aqueous solutions are in general oxide films. There is rather limited systematic information on the structure and properties of thin silicon anodic oxide films, particularly those formed in solutions of high silicon solubilities. On the other hand, the thicker oxide films formed at large potentials have been better characterized (see Chapter 3) and the information associated can be used for understanding the thin oxide films formed at relatively low potentials.

The Si-B-C system was mainly investigated with view to the understanding of the sintering mechanisms of SiC with boron in combination with carbon and the sintering of boron carbide with silicon [4]. The silicon solubility of about 2.5 at.% in B4C at 2323 K and the comparatively low temperatures of liquid phase formation in the ternary system enhance the sintering of boron carbide.

Measurable differences are observ ed in the total oxygen content of the six powders. The oxygen concentration of the baseline material is lower than that of lots 1 and 2 but higher than tliat of the other three powders the latter three powder lots have identical values of many of the parameters measured. Hie detennination of the soluble silicon also identifies a difference between two sets of powders tlie powders 0, 1 and 2 having a common value with lots 3, 4, and 5 having a lower amount of silicon dissolved under identical conditions. Silicon solubility is an independent parameter tmd the measurement results corroborate the finding that tliere are subtle differences in the properties of these two sets of materials.
