Silicate builder properties

Anhydrous glass lumps or cullets are of industrial importance because they are the first commercially available downstream silicate products. Although they lack typical builder properties, they... [Pg.388]

After phosphates, silicates are the most ubiquitous builders used in LADD formulations. Like tripolyphosphates, silicates are multifunctional. They are, however, better sequestrants of magnesium ions. A combination of phosphate and silicate is therefore generally used in ADD formulations. In addition to their sequestering properties, silicates provide alkalinity, soil suspension, and anticorrosion properties. A detailed treatment of the synthesis, chemistry, and applications of silicates has been undertaken by Iler [21], Other reviews are also available [22,23],... [Pg.332]

The literature has many other examples of techniques that are designed to help overcome the problems inherent in silicates, or to enhance their unique properties in manufacturing detergents. For example, Weldes and Vessey (28) describe a process for overspraying a powder of sodium silicate and a builder (as a core) with a detergent slurry (low silicate) to give a final product in which insolubles don t liiaterially increase with time. [Pg.274]

VI. THE ALKALINE SILICATES THEIR SPECIFIC PROPERTIES AND POTENTIAL AS DETERGENT BUILDERS... [Pg.543]

The principal known properties of the silicates in detergency, already enumerated in the preceding sections, are listed here. It quickly becomes apparent that they fit well with the requirements of builders, also cited in the previous material. [Pg.553]

The different properties of substances originally thought to be chemically identical make it possible to formulate more effective systems, thanks, for example, to new techniques of solid conditioning without drying. These products open the prospect of a different way to formulate new, cost-effective builder systems that are environmentally friendly. In particular, associations of active hydrated silicates and appropriate surfactant systems yield outstanding performances that place the silicates up with the very best builders. [Pg.558]
