Dynamic light scattering measurements of the miniemulsion lattices prove the successful incorporation of the inorganic cores into the miniemulsion droplet. All silica based polymer composites show particle sizes between 120 nm and 150 nm with a low PDI, whereas the silica precursor itself showed an average particle size of 79 nm. Hence, all silica nanoparticles have been incorporated into the emulsion droplet and each droplet contains only one silica particle. This can be proved by the SEM image of the composite. [Pg.259]

Bon and coworkers carried out a study on the fate of the nanoparticles throughout solids-stabilized emulsion polymerization [119], A quantitative method based on disk centrifugation was developed to monitor the amount of nanoparticles present in the water phase in solids-stabilized emulsion polymerizations of vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, and butyl acrylate. The concentration profile of nanoparticles in the water phase as a function of monomer conversion agreed with theoretical models developed for the packing densities in these systems [120]. Noteworthy was that in the case of silica-nanoparticle-stabilized emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate, the event of late-stage limited coalescence, leading to small armored non-spherical clusters, could be predicted and explained on the basis of the concentration profiles and particle size measurements. Adjusting the amount of silica nanoparticles prevented this phenomenon. [Pg.43]

In our laboratory, we have recently conducted gelation studies of silica nanopardcles in microgravity during the STS-95 space shuttle mission (28). Stable silica nanoparticle dispersions may be form either by polymerization of silicic acids in an aqueous system or through hydrolysis and condensation of silicon alkoxides (the sol-gel or Stober route). Comparison of small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of Ludox, a commercial aqueous silicate with acid- and base-catalyzed alkoxides shows that only aqueous silicate sols are uniform, whereas alkoxides generate fractal particles.
