Silanes methyltrimethoxysilane

The first step for the synthesis of a melt spinnable polysilane is the alkoxylation and distillation of the residue (Figure 1). 1,2-dimethyltetramethoxydisilane and 1,1,2-trimethyltrimethoxydisilane are mixed in a special ratio and a poly silane will be obtained by a catalytic redistribution reaction. Catalysts for this reaction are alkali alkoxides like sodium methoxylate. Phenylmethoxydisilanes [22] or phenylchloride are used as additives. A mixture of methyltrimethoxysilane and dimethyldimethoxy-silane distils off as a byproduct of the redistribution reaction. Figure 2 shows the mechanism of the catalytic redistribution. [Pg.295]

As the a-STPs are much more reactive than conventional y-silanes, a reactive diluent (vinyl- or methyltrimethoxysilane) can be added to adjust the viscosity of the prepolymer without any decrease in the curing speed [6, 8]. In an attempt to infer the nature of silane coatings on the glass surface, our study characterized polymerized silane films, deposited from silane solutions of different concentrations. Since methyltrimethoxysilane (MS) has the simplest chemical composition among the silane compounds used as coupling agents, polymerized silane films of the MS were chosen as a model system. The nature of other silane coatings on the glass surface is inferred on the basis of this model system. [Pg.142]

Monomeric silane derivatives (Wheeler, 2(X)5) used in conservation are trior tetrafunctional derivatives, such as tetraethoxysUane (synonyms ethyl silicate, tetraethyl silicate, TEOS). The polymerization, initiated by traces of water, is by hydrolysis and condensation (Figure 13.2). Not all the silanol Si-OH groups will condense to form cross-links (Amoroso and Fassina, 1983). The polymer formed from a tetrafunctional monomer will be similar to silica gel. Care must be taken to ensure anhydrous storage of silanes to prevent premature polymerization. Trifnnctional monomers such as methyltrimethoxysilane react in a similar fashion bnt retain the Si-C bond. The polymer formed from this monomer is resistant to solvents and photo-oxidation. It is tough but not flexible (Moncrieff, 1976). The silanol groups will react with -OH groups on a surface to create chemical links. [Pg.286]

The effect of other organosilanes on deteriorated limestone was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the depth of penetration, effects on color, and the degree of consohdation.
