Hydrolyzing agents

The Grignard reagent, so useful in synthesis, is hydrolyzed quickly and completely by water, as are the less manageable zinc alkyls and other organometallic compounds. [Pg.752]

Alkyl halides of complex composition react with water alone, though the simple halides like ethyl chloride are but slightly affected. Mustard gas, for example, probably owes some of its effect to the reaction ClH,CrHS—C,H,a - - 2H.0 - HOH Ci-S—C1H.OH + 2HC1 [Pg.752]

The use of steam instead of liquid wata has brought results in a few cases. Benzenesulfonic acid with steam yields benzene and sulfuric acid [Pg.753]

Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids are naturally the most commonly used, though many others ave been explored. Formic and trichloroacetic appear to be lower in activity than would be expected, whereas oxalic and benzenesulfonic are more active than sulfuric. Concentrations from very hi to very low are used in both laboratory and commercial practice. [Pg.753]

Sulfuric acid is particularly useful because it forms, with many types of organic substances, intermediate compounds that themselves readily undergo hydrolysis. This is exhibited in the add process of fat splitting to make fatty adds, in making alcohol from ethylene, and probably also in the hydration of acetylene to make aldehyde. In all these, sulfuric add exhibits a specific action, distinct from its hydrogen-ion conc tiation, and cannot be replaced by other acids. [Pg.753]

Process 2-4 is main. With an increasing concentration of alkali the rate of polymerization increases and the molecular weight decreases. The nature of hydrolyzing agent and salt additions influence the acrylamide polymerization process. Various methods of the acrylamide polymerization in the presence of alkaline agents have been reviewed [12,16,17]. [Pg.67]

The investigation showed two significant things. First, hydrolysis with sulfuric acid also caused a sharp reduction in moisture-regain but the minimum is reached only after 30 minutes of boiling. This indicated that sulfuric acid is considerably less active as a hydrolyzing agent than... [Pg.132]

The chemical agents and partially hydrolyzed agent and energetics from the rotary hydrolyzers are further treated with caustic in batch reactors until all the agent and energetics are destroyed. [Pg.28]

A water-methylene dichloride mixture is satisfactory as a hydrolyzing agent on groups of compounds such as phenyltrichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane and melhyltnchlorosilane. The value of higherboiling ethers lies in their ability to provide higher-boiling reaction systems. [Pg.1481]

Oxidation of methylated sugars with nitric acid was used extensively by early workers for locating the position of unsubstituted hydroxyl groups.116 Cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds appears to be facilitated by the presence of such catalysts as vanadium salts. As hot nitric acid acts as a hydrolyzing agent as well as an oxidant, oligo- and poly-saccharides may be used directly. [Pg.341]

Catalytic activity was observed when a 625-membered undecapeptide library was complexed with Zr(IV). Beads with active catalysts were easily identified under a low-power microscope and the structures of the active peptides were analyzed by Edmann degradation. The activity of four Zr(IV)-peptide complexes was further proven and quantified in solution-phase experiments not only with the examined indigo derivative but also with the corresponding para-nitrophenyl phosphate. The group extended the screening for phosphodiesterase activity and enabled discovery of solid phase bound peptide-Eu3+ complexes as hydrolyzing agents [15]. [Pg.441]

Hydrolysis—Hydrolyzing agents Alkaline hypochlorite is effective for hydrolyzing VX and G agents (for further information, see Table 26.3). [Pg.510]

In order to obtain silica sol, nitric acid solution in water was added drop wise to the vigorously mixed mixture of TEOS in ethanol and after finishing of the dosing of hydrolyzing agent temperature of the obtained reaction mixture was increased to the boiling point and was hold for two hours. [Pg.396]

The cellulose esters obtained are only slightly stable to the action of hydrolyzing agents. For example, boiling for 30 min in distilled water causes the phosphorus content of a cellulose hypophosphite to fall from 46-1.2% on boiling for one hour, it drops to 0.51 %. [Pg.118]

As has been stated in the case of ethylene, the catalytic oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons is complicated by the fact that such substances are somewhat sensitive to the action of hydrolyzing agents. The presence, therefore, of even small amounts of water in the oxidizing gases makes it difficult to determine the exact mechanism of the process, i.e., whether the primary reaction consists of oxidation, hydration, or simultaneous oxidation and hydration. The same situation is met with again in the catalytic oxidation of acetylene and is further complicated by the fact that the primary products of hydrolysis and oxidation tend to undergo a variety of different secondary reactions. [Pg.233]

In most procedures the acid is neutralized when hydrolysis has reached a desired stage. An electrolytic process for the removal of acid has been reported.124 It was found that isostatic processing of starch was faster with starch acidified with hydrochloric acid.125-127 Pre-hydrolysis of starch for further hydrolysis with milder hydrolyzing agents, such as sulfur dioxide, might also be of some benefit.128129... [Pg.188]
