This chapter includes an overview of the features of fluid balance and renal function that are essential to understanding diuretic action, a discussion of the uses of diuretics for treating abnormalities of fluid balance, and a detailed description of the various classes of diuretics. The practitioner who is armed with the knowledge of the mechanism of action of diuretic drugs and with appropriate recognition and respect for their potential side effects can use these compounds with a high degree of efficacy and safety.

The scope of the present chapter is to provide an overview of the current state of pharmacogenetics in schizophrenia treatment. The most promising pharmacogenetic findings will be presented for both antipsychotic response and the most commonly studied antipsychotic side effects. The application of pharmacogenetics to schizophrenia treatment will also be discussed, with an emphasis on the clinical utility of pharmacogenetic testing and directions for future research. 

In the history of ethnopharmacology, a most significant event was the isolation and clinical application of the alkaloid reserpine from Rauwolfia spp, a plant that had been used for millennia in the Ayurvedic tradition to treat "madness". Although reserpine had clearly demonstrated antipsychotic efficacy, it was soon replaced by the first synthetic antipsychotic, chlorpromazine, which proved more effective, had fewer side-effects and was relatively inexpensive to manufacture [44]. Exhibit 4 provides overviews for representative studies on natural products with putative anti-psychotic effects.
