Relatively short-chained cationic polymers of average molar mass and high charge density are suitable for patch flocculation. Modified polyethylene imines, polyamines, and polyamide-amine-epichlorohydrin resins are in this category. 

The evolved CO2 can lead to a highly cross-linked foam which is soft or hard depending on the prepolymers used. Similarly, the hardness of the set adhesive is determined by the hydrocarbon chain length in the polyol or polyamine used to react with the diisocyanate. Cross-linking by short-chain triols leads to a hard adhesive, whereas long diols result in elastomeric material, often used in textiles, or where a flexible joint is required.

A much greater number of acyclic polyamines have been described from spiders. These compounds feature short linear chains consisting of three to five carbons atoms, which are probably derived from amino acids. Spider-derived polyamines will therefore be discussed together with other amino acid-derived alkaloids and amines in Section 2.04.6.5. 

Aliphatic amines are classified in primary amines (RNH2), secondary amines (R2NH), and tertiary amines (R3N), with R representing in this very general scheme an alkyl chain of any length and further functionalization. Technically interesting classes of amines are shortalkyl amines (primary, secondary, and tertiary), fatty amines, di- and polyamines, as well as aromatic amines. Table 5.3.8 highlights...
