The part now played in chemical industry by sulphur and its wide variety of compounds scarcely needs emphasis. The astonishing increase in the production of sulphur and sulphuric acid during the last two decades, made possible by the discovery of the vast deposits of sulphur in Louisiana, is itself indicative of widespread applications. Many of the compounds of sulphur are notable for possessing valuable properties, and their use extends into almost every branch of- modern industry their chemical investigation has contributed much to the advancement of science and to the amenities of domestic life. Probably in no direction has sulphur more widely and directly influenced the general public than in connection with methods of transport, which have been revolutionised by the introduction of sulphur-vulcanised rubber as a wear-resisting, shock-absorbing material for the equipment of wheels of motor vehicles.

Applications of Microcelluiar Elastomers. Microcellular elastomers are widely used for various shock absorbing materials in automotive applications such as bumper cores, shock-absorbing elements in vehicle-suspension elements, machines, electrical equipment, cameras, precision machines, shoe soles and heels, and sports shoes. 

Kobe Steel, Ltd. formerly developed a new process for producing powdered rubber and constructed an actual plant with a capacity of 7,000 ton per year in Osaka in 1976 (l, 2). The powdered rubber is used as shock absorbing material for railway beds or as a filler for rubber products.

Identify actual environment of the PCA (modified service environment). The service environment should be translated into the ambient environment actually experienced by the PCA. Eor example, the temperature experienced by the PCA is influenced by both power dissipation and coohng. The mechanical environment is influenced by shock-absorbing material, resonances, and so on. 

If dry ice is used to keep the shipment cold, it must be placed outside the secondary container. The shock-absorbing material must then be arranged so that the secondary container will not become loose inside the shipping container as the dry ice sublimes. The shipping container must be labeled with the quantity of dry ice packed, the date of packing, and the DOT transportation classification for dry ice, ORM-A (see Figure App. 3.8). 

Design machinery and processes to reduce noise and vibration (mounting machines on shock-absorbing materials can dampen out vibration).
