Shigella dysenteriae type

Cyclic acetals of pyruvic acid are common in extracellular polysaccharides (compare, for example, Ref. 6). They have also been found in some LPS, namely, those from Shigella dysenteriae type 6 and E. coli 0-149 (Ref. 139), and in the teichoic acid from Brevibacterium iodinum. The biosynthesis of these acetals has already been discussed. [Pg.304]

The polysaccharide chain of the cell wall lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli 058 contains D-mannose, 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-mannose, 3-0-[(l R)-carboxyethyl)]-L-rhamnose (rhamnolytic acid), and 0-acetyl groups in the molar ratios of 2 1 1 . Structural investigations show that this polysaccharide, which contains a substituted trisaccharide repeating unit, has an identical structure (4) to that of Shigella dysenteriae type 5. [Pg.284]

Alkylation of metal chelates of sucrose with allyl halides and sodium bromo-acetate in DMSO yielded mono-O-allylated and mono-O-carboxymethylated derivatives. A new acidic monosaccharide from the O-specific lipopolysaccharide of Shigella dysenteriae type 3 has been identified as 4-0-[(/ )-l-carboxy-ethyl]-D-glucopyranose on the basis of chemical and mass-spectral evidence and by its synthesis by alkylation of methyl 2,3,6-tri-0-benzyl-a(P)-D-glucopyranoside with (5)-2-chloropropionic acid, esterification (with diazomethane), hydrogenolysis, and acid hydrolysis. ... [Pg.41]
