Epoxy resins are also used in special appHcations, such as an overlaying procedure requiring a durable, heat-resistant bond of a difficult-to-bond overlay on a wood-base panel substrate. Metal sheets used as overlays, for example, often require an epoxy adhesive. [Pg.379]

Ferrous-aUoy-clad tube sheets are generally prepared by a weld overlay process in which the alloy material is deposited by welding upon the face of the tube sheet. Precautions are required to produce a weld deposit free of defects, since these may permit the process fluid to attack the base metal below the alloy. Computational accuracy can be dramatically improved by dynamically adding elements where they minimize the error. For example, more elements ean be added in the neighborhood of a strong gradient in the velocity to help resolve shocks and vortex sheets. Elements may be removed from regions of smooth flow to minimize the computational cost without degrading the overall accuracy. Vinyl overlays are thin sheets of polyvinyl chloride, often with a simulated grain pattern, which are glued to the particleboard to obtain an inexpensive finish of relatively low durability. Particleboard panels containing a 3"dimensional design can be vacuum laminated with vinyl films, provided sharp corners are not present in the design. The thermoplastic vinyl film is heated to the softening temperature and, as the air is withdrawn from between the film and the machined panel, atmospheric pressure from above forces the film to conform to the contours of the panel. [Pg.239]

Advantages of plywood are many fold. The chief purpose in overlaying the wood first practiced by the ancients and later by artisans in the 18th and 19th centuries was to produce a surface of beauty over a less aesthetic surface. Today plywood is a mixture of this same objective of aesthetics and the functional period.
