Shear element

In the case of the screw shearing element (Fig. 12.33), melt is drawn into shear gaps integrated at regular intervals in the screw tip, where it is subjected to a defined shearing field in which the higher-molecular polymer components are broken down.

The simplest procedure to measure the interfadal shear viscosity is to use a torsion pendulum surface viscometer [55]. This technique observes the damping of a torsion pendulum due to the viscous drag of a surface film. This barrier screw appears similar to that in descrihed [13]. With screw pitch decreased within the feed zone, air cooling is sufficient to control the feed zone temperature. Shearing elements plus a pin/pineapple mixer follows the barrier melting zone. 

An examination of the particle morphology in the test samples as a function of the flow direction in the injection molder in relation to the transverse direction indicated that the particles are longer in the flow direction when the polymer nanocomposites were prepared with the Werner and Pfleider extruders. This observation is commensurate with the preferred morphology of montmorillonite as an ellipsoid rather than a disk in the modeling studies above. The opposite orientation was observed with test samples prepared from the Haake and the DSM extruders. The difference in the shear elements of the three different extruders could be responsible for the differences in the anisotropic orientations of the montmorillonite particles in the polymer.
